Resumo Objetivo: analisar a produção científica sobre direitos humanos dos portadores de transtornos mentais no período de 1989 a 2008. Método: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de pesquisas. Foram selecionados 11 artigos indexados nas bases de dados Lilacs, SciELO e PubMed. Resultados: Dos 11 artigos selecionados, 6 eram nacionais e 5 internacionais. Quanto ao ano, 1 foi publicado em 1994, 3 em 1995, 1 em 1999, 1 em 2000, 1 em 2001, 1 em 2003, 1 em 2007 e 2 em 2008. Foram identificadas 2 pesquisas qualitativas e 9 revisões bibliográficas. Conclusões: Verificou-se que todos os artigos publicados e indexados com os termos escolhidos relacionam diretamente os direitos humanos ao exercício da cidadania, buscando, além de mudanças legais, que a consolidação do movimento de reforma psiquiátrica gere resultados positivos para o cotidiano dos portadores de transtornos psiquiátricos.

Abstract Aim: To analyze the scientific production published from 1989 to 2008 on the human rights of people with mental disorders. Method: This is an integrative research review of 11 scientific articles indexed in Lilacs, PubMed and SciELO databases. Results: 6 articles were from Brazil and 5 from abroad. Regarding the publication year, 1 was published in 1994, 3 in 1995, 1 in 1999, 1 in 2000, 1 in 2001, 1 in 2003, 1 in 2007 and 2 in 2008. Among the studies, 2 were qualitative and 9 were literature reviews. Conclusion: The articles findings were related to human rights and citizenship and emphasized, in addition to legal reforms, the consolidation of the psychiatric reform, and the generation of positive changes in the daily llives of patients with psychiatric disorders.
